Question: Can I
cut trees down without a Certificate of
Appropriateness?
Answer: No. If the tree measures 8 inches in diameter from
4 feet off the ground, a certificate of Appropriateness (COA) is
required.
Question:
Can I paint my house any color I
want? Answer:
Yes. The HPC will gladly assist in color selection, but
the choice is the homeowner's.
Question: Do I
need a COA to
put in a driveway and/or parking area. Answer:
Yes.
Question:
Do I need a COA for a new fence? Answer: Yes
Question:
Can I do what I want with the back of the house since it
isn't visible from the street? Answer:
No. A COA is required for all alterations front and back.
Question: Do I need to obtain a COA before getting a building permit
for property in an historic district?
Answer: Yes, if the work involves exterior work. A COA is
required to obtain a Zoning Clearance. A Zoning Clearance is
required to obtain a Building Permit.
Question:
Do I need to obtain a COA befoe requesting approval from City Council
to demolish a building in an historic district?
Answer: Yes.
Question: Do I need a COA to install a satellite dish?
Answer: Yes, Satellite dishes should not be visible from the street in
an historic district.
