Statesville Historic Preservation Commission
I recently had the pleasure of touring this house in
Hickory, N. C. The Catawba County Historical Association raised
$2,000,000 for restorations, and it is now open to the public on
Thursday - Saturday from 9:00 to 4:00. It is also open on Sunday
from 1:30 to 4:30. The price of admission is $5. Further
information can be found on their website at www.catawbahistory.org/harper_house_hickory_history_center.php
I hope many Statesville historic home owners will take advantage of the
close proximity and visit this house in the near future. Below
are some shots to whet the appetite.
Considered
by the North Carolina Department of Archives and History to possess
"the finest Queen Anne interior styling in the entire state,” the goal
of the Harper House, is to serve the broad spectrum of Catawbans and
visitors from far and near as the Harper House / Hickory History Center.
Daniel Webster Shuler, originally from Michigan and who founded
Hickory’s first bank, built the house for him and his wife, in
1887.
All of the intricate details within the home were preserved, including
the foyer’s carved, coffered ceiling, the piano-grade cherry of the
staircase with two landings, and the beautifully, elaborate
stained-glass entrance window. Even the parquet floors of the
dining room and grand parlor with all the ornate brass-work of the
heavy doorknobs, sashes, key plates, and pocket doors were
protected.
The house is named for the Harper family, who resided in the home the
longest - from 1923, when Finley Gwyn Harper, Sr. (1880-1951),
purchased the home from Minnie C. Taylor - to December 21, 2000.
The Harper House is located at 310 North Center Street, Hickory, NC;
and you can call at anytime with any questions at 828-324-7294.
The Harper House is open for guided tours from Thursday to Saturday,
9am – 4pm; and on Sunday, from 1:30pm to 4:30pm. It is $5.00 per
person to tour through the house, and all proceeds benefit the
continuing preservation of the home and grounds. Groups of 10 or
more are asked to call in advance to make an appointment for a tour.
This photo shows the lovely and ornate stairway.

This mantle in the parlor simply takes away your breath. Also,
the ceiling!! The wallpaper here is all in different pieces,
It is so well done, it appears to be one solid piece.

This shot was taken in the master bedroom. More detail of the ceilings can also be seen here.

This is an old photo of the house. From this.....

to this.
I would like to thank Heather Deckelnick and the Catawba County
Historical Association for sharing this preview into the Harper House
with us.
